Four number-crunching schoolkids have reached the top 100 in the first round of the National Mathematics Challenge.

To be invited to take part, students had to score highly in a test taken earlier in the year. Sutton Grammar School boy Hui Li, 16, reached 12th place and schoolmate Paul Cupis, 16, was numbered 22 in the order. Paul has now been awarded a scholarship for a week of maths training at Birmingham University. This is part of the process of selecting the next British Olympiad mathematics team.

Also highly placed were Sun Hee Kwak, of Sutton High School for Girls, in 36th place and Jeremy Howard-Knight of Wilson's School, in 69th place. Only famous public school St. Paul's could better Sutton Grammar's success by having more students in the top 25 places.

Sutton Grammar headmaster Gordon Ironside said: "To have three state-educated boys from one town in the top 100 is an indication of the strength of the mathematics teaching in Sutton schools."
